Insects

Ants

Formicidae

An ant queen can be 20 years old. A worker (sterile female) only lives 3-4 years. An ant queen can produce 300 eggs a day during the summer, which amounts to 600,000 eggs throughout her life! Fertilized eggs become females – unfertilized eggs become males. The ant queen is fertilized on just one occasion which lasts her whole lifetime. The male dies after mating.
